Changing and deleting Administrators in Windows XP

My neighbor gave me a Dell computer (4500 I believe) for me to fix up for my
grand kids. I made their parents the new Administrator and each child has
their own account. The problem is that my neighbor and her deceased husband
are still showing up as Administrators and I am unable to delete those
accounts. When I try to install a child's program, it tells me I don't have
enough disc space when there is like 64 GB. Can someone PLEASE help??? Thanks

One should format & reinstall xp at this time (boot to xp cd,reinstall) or
use
the recovery cds to reinstall.However,if thats not an option,then at
starting pc,
tap the F8 key,select safe mode,enter xp as administrator,open user accounts
and edit...

I don't have either disc so will have to try the safe mode. IF I do that,
will it allow me to delete the original two administrators and just leave the
one that I established? IF I delete them will it damage any existing
programs?

Once you goto safe mode you will have to login as Administrator(built in
account) then you will be able to change anything as far as user accounts are
concerned. It is not clear about the number of user accounts that you have.
Let me know the number of administrator accounts and limited user accounts
that you have. Deleting the user accounts will not affect majority of the
programs exept if the program is installed to only one user account.

First of all, THANK YOU for trying to help me!!

When I got the computer, there were two users set up on the computer and I
THINK they both were Administrators. When I set it up for my Grandkids, I
removed the previous 2 (so I thought) and added 'mom and dad' as
administrators with a password and then my two grandchildren as users - each
with their own logon and no password. I personalized each desktop screen
with a photo that applied to the person loggin in.

Now the problem I have is that when I try to install a simple little game
(for a 4 year old) it tells me I don't have enough disc space - the game
takes like 621 mb I think and the computer has 62gb of free space.

Yesterday I did go into safe mode and deleted the two original users but
then when I logged in as one of the other users, they were still there!!

That's as far as I got because it was in the middle of a 4 year olds
BIRTHDAY PARTY!!

IF you can help me, I will be MOST appreciative! Also, can you tell me if I
made a mistake by using 3 different photos as desktops and 3 small thumbnail
photos for logging on? Will that cause the computer to run slower??

Hi Clutch,

User accounts:
First of all you made a smart move in selecting a different photos for
different account and the computer does not become slow doing so.

Since you said you deleted the account but still it exists. Go back to
safemode and login as Administrator(built in account //cannot be deleted or
modified). In the Administrator user account click on start-> run and type
"control userpasswords2" without quotes. Select the account that you want to
remove and then click remove. Also delete files(data of the account to be
deleted will be at stake) if it prompts you to. Now you must be having only
the user accounts that you need. Mom, Dad and your 2 grand childrens account
plus a built in Administrator account.

Installation:

1> delete all the temporary files on the computer
a> click start-> run
b> type "temp" without quotes
c> click edit and then select all
d> press delete key on the keyboard.(Note you may not be able to delete
all the files because some might be in use.)

2> repeat the steps a to d. Type "%temp%" and "prefetch" instead of "temp".
3> Steps to perform a clean boot in Windows XP (Ref:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353)

Step 1: Start the System Configuration Utility
Click Start, click Run, type msconfig , and then click OK.

The System Configuration Utility dialog box appears.
Step 2: Configure selective startup options
1. In the System Configuration Utility dialog box, click the General tab,
and then click Selective Startup.
2. Click to clear the Process SYSTEM.INI File check box.
3. Click to clear the Process WIN.INI File check box.
4. Click to clear the Load Startup Items check box.
5. Click the Services tab.
6. Click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box.
7. Click Disable All, and then click OK..
8. When you are prompted, click Restart to restart the computer.

Note: If you get Access denied error message dont worry just click "OK"

4> Click "Dont show this message again" then "OK", if you get a windows
which says you have used system configuration utility to make changes.
5> If you are successfull in installing the program then follow the steps
below.
1. Click Start, click Run, type msconfig , and then click OK.
2. Click on Normal startup
3. Click Apply -> Close and restart the computer.

6> try installing the program from safemode.

Dear Bob,
THANK YOU!
Unfortunately I can't try this fix until I go back to their house as I left
the computer there. I feel certain that will do it and I can't wait to try
it!

To clarify one thing - the photos I used for their desk tops and their login
names are actual photographs that I took - not the ones furnished by Windows.

I hope you won't mind if I contact you again, once I've tried what you have
suggested - either to praise you for your help or to pick you brain some
more!!
