Changed registry value not retained at bootup

Alvin

I have a network sharing problem and a possible solution is to change
the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control/Lsa/restrictanonymous
registry value from 1 to 0. When I make the change in regedit and
reboot the system it reverts back to 1 again.
I am running Windows XP Home Edition with SP1. I wanted to upgrade to
SP2 but had no luck running Windows Update tool. I'm not sure if it is
really necessary to make the upgrade anyway.
This is first time I have tried changing a registry value (though I
have removed some ad junk before) but what I have read suggests it
should retain the change without any extra steps. Am I missing
something?

Any advice would be very welcome.

Depends, Alvin. Is the profile you are using to change this have Admin
privileges? Have you tried to do this from the System Admin account? Have
you studied the possible side effects from this edit?

Pertaining to the last question, do some reading here:

Lastly, disable your AV's, etc, make the change and then use:

Save Settings on Exit (Line 54)

To use the Regedit: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it
and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by
right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.

Hi Kelly, the profile I am using does have Admin privileges but is not
the System Admin account. I will try from that account to see if
behaviour any different. I understand security risk but I am on a home
network and use a router for internet access so I think I should be
safe.

Is is not sufficient to use change value function of regedit to make
changes rather than saving to file, changing and then importing?
Thanks, Alvin

I used your admin_enable script to re-establish the account then came
up in Safe mode and used the Administrator account to change value but,
as before, after rebooting the value has reverted to previous one.

The network sharing problem I face is one for which I have seen many
requests for help in newsgroups. The other system on my network,
running Windows XP Professional Edition, cannot access my shared
folders or printer whilst I can see everything in My Network Places
including his shared folders fine. The access denied message is given:
namely, 'system' is not accessible. You might not have permission to
use this network resource ....

I think that my system is the likely problem rather than the other one.
The solutions posted are generally to ensure firewall software is
disabled, ensure browser service running and the solution with the
restrictanonymous registry change has cropped up more than once and has
suggested this has been the fix. A workaround perhaps but so long as
security is not compromised, I would be willing to fix it this way if I
could.

I am going to try again at installing SP2 then maybe things will look
better. I know now that I need to enable automatic update to be able to
install manually so I'll give it a try.

Good news. Although I couldn't get update feature to work, I located
the SP2 download and installed successfully. After this I changed the
registry value and, after rebooting, the value was retained. Further,
my network sharing problem was fixed by the registry value change.
