I have Window Vista Business pre-installed on a Thinkpad i just purchased.
The Vista language is set to Swedish (a swedish layout thinkpad). I want to
change the language to English for Vista - how do I do that?

Purchase a "Full English Version" of Windows Vista
and perform a "clean install". Or send the ThinkPad
back to IBM and request an English version.

As answered elsewhere, only Ultimate has the language change capability.
You'll have to buy a new version of Vista.

I find this unacceptable that MS is bragging about bridging cultures and
offering Language Packs and they force you to pay twice to have a different
language for Vista. Specially since you can download for free the languange
Packs for XP.

I Agree with Rob, I think if you've buy an original software with your
equipment, you most have a free of charge packs download from the MS site...

I also find this very strange... I've just purchased a PC in Italy where I
happen to live at the moment, expecting that I would be able to change the
language back to English (as is possible with every previous version of MS
operating system I've owned) to find that I now have to spend a fortune on
the "Ultimate" edition (with a heap of peripheral functionality of which I
have no requirement) in order to do so...

Surely this is a backward step, and there must be a simpler way of providing
this service.... Anyone from Microsoft care to comment...?

I agree with Rob, I had the same experience with Vista Home Premium, the
version I bought is French and cannot be changed to English without buying a
new version, next time I buy a Mac

If you want Windows in a language other than the one the box shows as being
present, you should put that box back on the shelf and instead pick one that
shows that language as being present. In other words, if you picked up a
"U.S. English" copy of Vista and expected it to contain a Spanish language
version of Vista, that would be an unrealistic expectation.

This is ridiculous. I can't believe I've just made this stupid mistake
of buying a brand new Vista laptop thinking it would be usable. I'm a
Canadian in Latin America, and never in my wildest imagination did I
ever think for a second that I would be unable to change it over to
English without resorting to third party hacks (thanks froggie, I hope
your software works for me... people like you are awesome), buying a
second copy of this piece of crap operating system, better yet
installing Linux, or whatever else I have to do to make it work.
Unfortunately linux may not be an option since it's a tablet... I REALLY
thought it would just work right straight out of the box, without any
"hacking".

To the buffoon suggesting we "put it back on the shelf and get the
right one". Thanks, really helpful. The software is annoyingly
pre-installed, and there are no English laptop versions available in
this country. There is also no warning label that says "WARNING GOOD
FOR ONE LANGUAGE ONLY".

"Annoyingly preinstalled" ???? Have you ever purchased a Windows or Mac
computer where it was any other way? It doesn't really look like this post
was a request for help, only to rant.
I was lulled into a false sense of security when trying the Macs, and
seeing my girlfriend figure out how to change the language instantly in
seconds. Knowing everything is always infinitely more difficult on
Windows, I figured we'd be able to figure it out once we got it back to
where we're staying. Big mistake - if there was such a thing as a
return policy in this country I'd definitely be taking this thing back
and getting the mac. Useless.

So you didn't bother to answer a critical question while you were still in
the store, BEFORE you made the purchase! Seems like you know, deep down in
your bones, that YOU did a did a stupid thing and you want to place the
blame elsewhere. Go away.

So then, you have a beef with the computer manufacturer that didn't include
a separate disk, even though virtually all makers of Windows machines have
done this for years. Old news. Nobody likes it, but whadya gonna do?

You went into a store where you couldn't communicate the language spoken.

You are unhappy that a salesperson was more interested in the sale than
giving you an informed answer to your question. Like that should surprise
anyone. (Or maybe he would have, had you known the language of the region).

You tried and failed to make technical changes on a computer that you were
unable to "read" because you don't understand Spanish. You plunked down
your hard earned cash on the assumption that you could do it later without
getting on the internet and accessing a group like this - or other
resource - to find out for sure if it was REALLY possible to do what you
wanted to accomplish.

AND, you come to a Vista group to rant and describe to the world how poorly
you make decisions. AND, blame Microsoft/Vista for your foolishness.
That's real hutzpah! Most people would have been too embarrassed to
publicize this to the world.

YOU screwed up from start to finish. Move on, my friend. Assuming that you
can download Vista drivers for your computer, buy an OEM copy of Vista an
install it from scratch. Copies are really quite reasonable from
Newegg.com.

Or throw it into the garbage an buy a Mac.

I went back over your posts and can't find anyplace where you mentioned your
fix. Only that you thanked someone for creating a third party program but
you didn't say that you had used it.

There haven't been that many posts to this newsgroup about people wanting to
change the language of their OS on this newsgroups so I guess I haven't
insulted too many people.

D

David P

Of course. You deliberately being dense?

I've been all over three of the Vista newsgroups, and there aren't that many
threads like this one.

Go shoot yourself in the foot again, then come back and report how it was
someone else's fault.
