I see how to choose the program that opens a file TOOLS, FOLDER OPTIONS,
FILE TYPES. But how do you change the Icon used to represent the files?

Generally you right-click on the icon and select Properties - and the dialog
box that pops up will have an option to change the icon.

If the file already has a program associated with it, it'll take the default
icon from the list that you describe in your post.

Oops, forgot one thing!!!

To change the icon for the existing file types, got to TOOLS, FOLDER
OPTIONS, FILE TYPES and click on the Advanced button. At the top of the
resulting page should be an option to change the icon.

When I go there, there is no Advanced choice. I am using XP Pro and I am
the administrator. The only thing I can do is hit Change to select a
different program but I see nothing about the icon.
