Hi
A friend of mine who has recently separated from her husband has
asked me if I can remove his name as registered owner of Windows XP HE
and replace it with her own. She has come to me with a new Windows XP HE
upgrade disk. I don't want to wipe all of her applications so have just
treated it as an upgrade to bring her up to SP 2. Is there any way to
change the data?

Assuming you have authority to change things you can change all reference in
all programs in your registry from the previous owner to the new owner.

Click on Start... Run... type in regedit. Click OK. To be safe save a copy
of the current registry somewhere on your hard drive. Click on File...
Export.. and safe a copy of the registry.

Now click on Edit... Find... type in the previous owner's name exactly as it
is listed. When you find a listing change it to your name. Click on Find
Next (or use the F3 key) Change each listing from the previous name to your
desired current name.

If you somehow screw things up you can Import your saved Registry and
recover.

You need to be carefull as some programs use the name to get the serial
number and changing the name will stop the program working. Windows is fine
but third party programs are another thing.
