change pdf and powerpoint files from symbols to words

I get pdf and power point files from my family. When I try to open them, I
get symbols. What do I need to do to read the files?
 
For Power point you need Microsoft Office installed in your computer, which
you need tp purchase.

For PDF you need Adobe Reader which you can download for free from the
Internet
