After removing a duplicate copy of Windows XP I am left with Windows1. I
would like to edit the boot.ini file and change the name to Windows
(eliminate the suffix 1) so that I conform to normal standards. I don't
want to do these things and find I cannot reboot. Can someone please advise
me how to proceed. Thanks.

Go to Start>run and type

sysdm.cpl

then the "Advance" Tab> Startup and Recovery "Settings">"Edit"

Then it should be obvious what to edit.

Good Luck

Thanks for the instructions. Works fine BUT I cannot change the name of
the Windows1 folder in My Computer. Can you tell me what I am NOT doing?
Thanks again.

I wouldn't even try renaming that folder, too much hassles, a lot of
registry work and if you miss something, your system might not even boot.

Thank you very much. That was what I was afraid of in the first place, and
why I was so timid in dealing with the problem. I had a similar problem
with disastrous results back about 23 years ago in my UNIX days.

Are you by chance running Linux? You can download a LiveCD and boot off the
CD with a Linux OS which never touches your harddrive unless you save your
configuration files.

If that is the folder in use do not even think of changing it. That
name will be pervasive in registry, and you will just get in a thorough
mess. Learn to live with it (mine for historic reasons is Win95).
There are even benefits in making it that bit more difficult for trojans
