I already have Norton and Windows Defender. Shouldn't those take care of any
viruses or spyware??

Hi George,

Are you running something like Spybot or SpywareBlaster? Apps. like these
(there are others) have the capability to "lock" your home page, in a effort
to prevent homepage hijacking. There is usually an option within the
application itself to disable that setting.

hardWhen it come to spyware, you are "safer" if you scan hard drive with at
least to different ones. Spybot is GOOD!

Thanks

By "Norton," do you mean Norton Anti-Virus? Norton Anti-Virus is, in my
view, the *worst* of all available anti-virus products.

Even if it were the best product, it still couldn't possibly guarantee that
you are virus-free. All any anti-virus program can do is protect you against
the viruses it knows about. And since a virus has to be out there in the
field, actively infecting people's computers, before the anti-virus company
knows about it, there is always a period of time between the introduction of
a new virus and your getting updated virus definitions to protect you
against it. During that period, there are people who get infected, and one
of them could be you.

The same goes for anti-spyware programs. All software can do is
substantially reduce the risk of infection. It can never do a perfect job.
That's why care is required in addition to software.

Regarding Windows Defender, a single anti-spyware product is not enough to
protect you. None is good
enough and you need at least two. Note what Eric Howes, who has done
extensive testing on Anti-Spyware products, states:

"No single anti-spyware scanner removes everything. Even the best-performing
anti-spyware scanner in these tests missed fully one quarter of the
"critical" files and Registry entries" See
http://spywarewarrior.com/asw-test-guide.htm

I personally run the free Avast anti-virus, and the following anti-spyware
programs (all are free):

Spyware Blaster
Adaware
Spybot Search and Destroy
Windows defender.

Internet Explorer will not let me change my Home Page. What do I need to do??

Try in safe Mode and if you have a security software that can block you from
changing the Home page go to the configuration Option and change that to
allow you to change the Home page.
In the S&D click on Tools >> IE Tweaks >> Miscellaneous Locks
[ ] Lock IE Start Page Settings in front of the current user. uncheck
this option or Ad-Aware working in Ad-watch can block you from editing the
home page.
You can Start with clean Boot by opening the Run command and type in:
msconfig click [OK]
On the System configuration window click on StartUp Tab and uncheck the
Lines for Norton and Defender and reboot your computer and try to change the
Home page.
Also you could have Spyware that blocking you from changing the Home page so
scan for malwares.
Here is the Registry editing:
Open the RUN command and type regedit32.exe
or regedit.exe and Click OK.

In the registry Editor click on this KEY:
[+] HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main.
Loook in the Right Pane/Window for Local Page Right click on it and select
Modify.
In the new window Input the Data C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\blank.htm and click OK.
Then Locate *Start Page* and there put the New Home page you want, Right
Click on it and select Modify and in the Data: http://www.bbc.co.uk for Ex
and click OK.

The same on this KEY:
[+] HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main.
Local Page change to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\blank.htm.

Start Page
:http://www.microsoft.com/isapi/reddir.dll?prd={SUB_PRD}&clcid={SUB_CLSID}&pver={SUB_PVER}&ar=home
click Ok and Exit the Registry Editor change the home page on the IE
Properties also and Reboot and see if the issue resolved.

I've tried everything all of you have suggested and nothing has worked. My
Home Page goes to www.msn.com and it will not let me change it. When I go to
Tools>Internet Options and tell it to change the Home Page, it accepts the
new Home Page I type in, but then reverts right back to the MSN Home Page.
What else can I do??

Try the Home Page Lock and Unlock from here- line 63 1st column:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
Bear in mind if you have a protection/security software that configured or
by default set to block any changes or alert you to take action, try to
reconfigure it to allow you to change the Home page.
Did you clicked on Apply then [OK] when you tried the URL for your new Home
page?.

Nass, Thank you for your help. I found where Norton Anti-Virus was blocking
my home page change. I unchecked that box and now my homepage is what I want
it to be. Thanks, again.

Probably an antivirus program is blocking attempts to change the home page.
If you are using Norton Internet Security, turn this off by:
1. Open Norton Internet Security
2. Click Options, select Norton Antivirus
3. Under Internet, click Home Page Protection
4. Uncheck Turn Home Page Protection On

Other systems are probably similar.
