Change file type name

How do I change the file type name? When I use "rename"
it saves it under the original file type. and just adds
the new file type I want right before the old file type
name.

Just enter the name, followed by the extension. oldfile.abc newfile.def.
Be aware that changing file types will obviously change what application
opens that file.

Be aware that changing the file extension will not change the file type.

Changing myfile.doc to myfile.jpg will not convert the .doc file to a .jpg
file.

This does not work: I get-
filename.old
I use rename and type filename.new
The file is still of the type old!

Do you have Explorer set up to show file extensions?
