Change default install path

I have a small boot HD (C:), but my D: drive is large and where I want to
install most applications. How do I change the default path of

c:\program files\

to

d:\program files\
 
i'm not sure if you can change the "default" dir for
installing programs.. i have 2 partitions and usually
just type where i want to install..
