change data type from text to date/time

Hi,
A field in a table is a text field, but has been used to enter numbers.

In fact this field should be a date/time field where a user should be able
to enter for example: 12 which would produce 12:00 or 12.45 to produce 12:45.
I have made a copy of the table and tried to change the field from text to
date/time, however, I lose all the data.

Is there a way to convert text to date/time (it could also be converted to a
number field if that's easier, with two decimal places example 12.45)?

It doesn't sound like DATETIME data to me e.g. where's is the year/
month/day element in the value '12'?
