change cursor appearance

My cursor in Word somehow changed to a very small vertical bar (or even a
dot), and it's driving me nuts. No where can I find anything that can change
this back. The cursor in other programs appears unaffected, and I have made
no changes that point to an obvious cause. Help is ....less. Any
suggestions (be nice)?
