Change Association

I have Excel XP (2002). I just installed Excel 2007 without deleting the XP
version. Of course, the association for all .xls file went to Excel 2007.
I want to change that back to Excel XP.
I followed the directions in HELP under "Association" and that took me to
the dialog box that lists all the programs I have and asks me to pick the
program I want to associate .xls with. However, only Excel 2007 is listed
and not Excel XP. Why is not Excel XP listed and how do I change the
association back to Excel XP. Thanks for your time. Otto

Whilst many Excel users post here I suggest you post to an Excel
newsgroup for an answer:
microsoft.public.excel.misc

As a matter of curiosity why do you want to change the file association.
Is your question really about file sharing between machines. I take it
you have the older version of Excel on a second machine. If I am
understanding your problem correctly you need to know the most practical
way to share files between the machines.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for responding to my query.
No, my problem is not related to file sharing between computers. It's more
mundane than that. I have a single home computer and I have Excel XP. I am
quite familiar with Excel XP and I do a lot of VBA stuff with it in helping
people that post to the various Excel newsgroups. That's my hobby.
But I see that more and more people are asking questions related to Excel
2007. If I'm to help them I have to become familiar with Excel 2007 myself.
I have a lot of work I'm doing for a number of people (all gratis) and it's
all in Excel XP, so I'm not willing to jump into 2007 with both feet, so to
speak. What I want to do is play with 2007 to gain familiarity with it
while still maintaining what I'm doing with XP, then gradually move into
2007.
So I installed Office 2007 and of course the file association moved to 2007.
All the above is why I want to change the .xls association back to XP.
You say to contact an Excel newsgroup. File association is a Windows task
and that's why I posted to this newsgroup.
Thanks again and I would appreciate it if you could help with this. Otto

I would de-register 2007 and re-register 2002

Close Excel first and On the Windows Taskbar

Start>Run "C:\yourpathto2007\excel.exe" /unregserver

See the space between exe and /regserver.

Then register 2002

Start>Run "C:\yourpathto2002\excel.exe" /regserver

This process should make Excel 2002 the default for opening files.

Thanks Gord. That worked like a charm once I figured out that Office10 and
Office12 didn't have spaces in them Otto
