I have 2 PCs and a laptop on a home network. All are
running XP. I'm using Norton Internet Security on all. My
network is using a Linksys router/4-port switch.

Prior to my current problem I could access any computer
from any other computer. Now my problem is:

From computer A I can access all resources on B & C.
From B & C I can access the My Documents folder on A, but
nothing else on that HD or any of the other resources.
When I try to access A in Win Explorer through My Network
Places, A shows up, but I'm denied access.

I've unshared and reshared resources on A, but there's no
change. I've tried disabling the firewall on A ... no
change.

I'm stumped and would really appreciate some help.

Tish,

Norton Internet Security, like other personal firewalls, is known for
interfering with file sharing. Disabling it doesn't always help - you may have
to un install it, using religiously all procedures from Symantec, or enable it
then configure it properly.

But you should also check authentication settings on each computer. Do you have
XP Home or Pro - there is a big difference here.

On any XP Pro computer, check to see if Simple File Sharing (Control Panel -
Folder Options - View - Advanced settings) is enabled or disabled. With XP Pro,
you need to have SFS properly set on each computer.

With XP Pro, if SFS is disabled, check the Local Security Policy (Control Panel
- Administrative Tools). Under Local Policies - Security Options, look at
"Network access: Sharing and security model", and ensure it's set to "Classic -
local users authenticate as themselves".

With XP Pro, if you set the above Local Security Policy to "Guest only", enable
the Guest account, using Start - Run - "cmd" - type "net user guest /active:yes"
in the command window. If "Classic", setup and use a common non-Guest account
on all computers. Whichever account is used, give it an identical, non-blank
password on all computers.

For XP Home, OR for XP Pro with Simple File Sharing enabled, make sure that the
Guest account is enabled, on each computer. Enable Guest with Start - Run -
"cmd" - type "net user guest /active:yes" in the command window.

Do you have any idea what changes you made just before observing your current
problem?

Cheers,
Chuck
Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.

I thought I would post the solution to a similar problem I had with 4
computers connected to a Linksys router. While I was able to see all
computers from every other computer, I would get an access denied message
when I would try to click on the desk computer icon. This was solved by
running regedit then going to
HKEY_Local_Machine\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa then clicking on
restrictanonymous and changing the value from 1 to 0 then rebooting.
I hope this helps someone.

On A, I have XP Home, on B & C I have XP Pro. I will
check all the things you've listed and let you know what
I find. I've had the problem several months now and don't
remember what changes I might have made. Thanks for your
comments.

I'll give it a try and report back. Thanks!

Your very simple one digit registry change solved all my problems.
Thank you sooo much.

Hello:
I am glad it helped. I found this on a windows forum on the web. I wish I
knew more to know why it works and why installing windows xp on my desk
computer ended up with a different registry value. May be a tech genius can
explain it.
