center and merge

Is there anyway to undo your center and merge.
I centered and merged each cell for several rows, I then
went to sort asending, but found I could not as the
centered and merged cells had to be all of the same size.
Since I had centered and merged a while ago and could not
use the undo feature, I was wondering if there is a way to
remove center and merge if you decide you do not want it
or if it stops you from doing a sort.
The only thing I could do was retype everything, but isn't
there a simpler way?

Select all the cells in the range of merged cells(go big, just in case).

Format>Cells>Alignment uncheck "merge cells".

I hope you noticed that when you originally merged the cells that data was
lost if you had data in more than one cell.
