Cell word count

Does anyone know what the maximum word count might be in
a single cell (or the total characters in a text
string). At some point I thought it was 255, but I have
a merged and centered cell that seems to want to stop at
about 250 words. Thanks.

Excel does not have a word count per cell, it has a
character count limit, which has been 255 characters for a
long time (though I think Excel2002 goes past that). So
if it is stopping at 250 words, that could be 255
characters.

Jennifer,

From XL2000 Help

Column width 255 characters

Length of cell contents (text) 32,767 characters. Only 1,024 display in a
cell; all 32,767 display in the formula bar.

I think you can count the spaces within text in a cell. That would often be
the same as the number of words.
