Cell selections with merged cells?

We are having great difficutly making cell selections when a worksheet
includes merged cells that extend outside the desired selection. For
example, we often divide a table into major sections vertically by merging
all the cells in a given row and then entering a major section heading in
that row. However, if we try to select all the cells in the first three
columns of a ten column table, then the entire table (all columns) is
selected (versus the three desired columns) if the selection includes any of
the merged section headings (which merge cells from all columns in that
row). Is there anyway to force a rectangular selection when the selection
includes merged rows that extend outside the selection?

I don't think so. There are two ways go here I think. One is to unmerge
the cells and use "center across selection" alignment formatting if
possible. If these are just heading cells it's the way to in any case since
merged cells are such a pita. The other avenue to investigate is why you
need to "select" this range in the first place. Maybe you can do what you
want with a macro that doesn't do any selecting.
