What type of formula do you need to use so that it doesnt come into effect
until a given cell has a wriiten value in it?

ie, for numbers you could do" if A1>0 then .......
i need something that'll define text, "If A1= Any Letter, then ....

You're asking in the wrong place, it seems; it looks like you're using Excel,
