Hi Susan,
Have a worksheet on a shared drive. Need to protect
certain cells for viewing only. Need to have adjacent
cells available for comments by the viewers. Have followed
the directions on help. But not working. Help please.
Thank you all.

This involves these steps:

Select all cells (click on the box left of the A and above the 1) and
lock them (Edit, Format cells, protection tab, check "Locked").
Normally all cells are locked by default.

Now select the cells you want to be accessible and unlock them (see
above, uncheck "Locked")

Now protect the worksheet: Tools, Protection, "Protect Sheet"

Select the things you want the user to be able to do and enter a
password if needed.

Hi Susan,
Does not work, have tried this. Being shared is a factor.

Then first unshare the workbook, set all protections as mentioned
above, then reshare the workbook.

BTW: I always advise against sharing workbooks, Excel isn't reliable at
sharing workbooks at all.

You could download the third party tool: AddinTools Assist from
http://www.addintools.com. It will temporarily display unlocked cells and
locked cells with different background colors. You will find out which are
locked cells, which are unlocked cells immediately. The "To Lock" button and
"To Unlock" button could lock or unlock the selected cell immediately. In
this way, you can decide fast which part of spreadsheet allows changing, and
which part disallows.
The function is very useful when you have forgotten which cells are locked
in a workbook or sheet.
