cell formatting

I have sheet that is not letting me format a number unless I doubl
click on the cell.

Say the cell value is 5.00000 I cannot reduce the number of decimals.

There is over 12k rows of data so I don't particularly want to g
through each cell.

Try - tools / options / edit / fixed decimal.

Thanks Ozzie but I've tried that and it didn't work.

I've since been successful at this in a round about way.
I copied and pasted the cells into Word and then re-copied from Wor
and Pasted as text in Excel.

Seemed to work in a bizzare way

Perhaps the cells are actually formatted as Text?

Copy a blank cell. Select your cells. Paste Special>Add>OK>Esc.
