Cell content not deleted

A cell's content is replaced with a different number when
deleted/cleared. But an adjacent cell's content is cleared
when deleted. Any suggestions on fixing the problem.

Please explain exactly what you are doing when you delete/clear the former
cell.
Do you select it and press the delete key on the keyboard, or select it and
use Edit > Delete, or what?
After doing whatever it is, are you really saying that the cell contains a
number?
