CDs playing too fast

T

Trent SC

A colleague's computer is running Windows XP Home (SP2) with Windows Media
Player 10 and MusicMatch as a secondary CD audio player.

For reasons which neither of us can fathom, it's playing audio CDs at high
speed, and there doesn't seem to be an obvious setting to adjust this.

Any clues, or indeed, any ideas what information the group might need to pin
down the issue?

TIA

Reinstalling the correct sound card drivers typically corrects the
"chipmunk" sounds. Sometime they get "updated" for an incorrect card.

If I don't know what the sound card is, do I run the risk of getting
misreported information from Belarc/Aida32/similar if the wrong drivers have
been downloaded? The problem I have is that the machine is a remote one and
the user is far from a power user.

All you can do is try. How it got to be in this condition is relevant.
If the result is from "upgrades" or SP2 install the fix may change.
Incorrect "driver" upgrade can be rolled back. SP2 may require a new
driver from the vendor. It's all guesses unless you have something to go on.
