CDs don't show up until reboot

When I place a CD-ROM in either of my drives (CD-RW and DVD-ROM),
autoplay doesn't run and explorer simply shows a CD-ROM icon and when I
double click the drive, I get error "Please insert a disc in drive d:."
If I restart and leave the disc in the drive, it will show up. It would
be really nice if I could change out discs without restarting.

Possible solution:

Go to Start > Run and type in: devmgmt.msc
and press the Enter key. After the Device Manager
window opens, scroll down to your CD-RW
drive, click the "+" to expand, then right-click on
your CD Drive and select Uninstall. You will
be prompted to reboot your computer, so reboot
and Windows XP will reinstall the CD Drive.

Repeat the procedure for your DVD drive.
