cdrom can't read ALL cd's

Hi Guys
My neice has cdrom problems.
It is actually a CD-RW drive.
It worked ok till she had to do a system restorebecause she tried to
download some crazzy screen saver and it
half installed and we couldn't get it to finish or uninstall it.
So we did a system restore. Everything went great, but now she says the
cd-rw drive will only read some cd's.
don't seam to matter what kind of cd,when it don't want to read it.
(factory pressed or home burned)
I had her run chkdsk, no help, had her go to device manager and uninstall it
and reboot,no help.
I don't know where to look next.
Can someone give me a clue?
Thanks

Hi Carl,

It sounds like an intermittent failure of the cdrw. Try cleaning the drive
with a lens cleaner.

Hi Larry
Sorry , forgot to mention,we tried that to ,or she did.
Any other sugestions.
Thanks
Remember it just happend since system restore, not that that may have
anything to do with it.
But reinstalling the drivers should have cured that,i would think.

Actually that may have had a lot to do with it. I have seen a lot of older
cd drives fail during or right after running a windows install or a system
recovery. The stress of constant access during installation can push faulty
components over the edge.

Ok , Thanks Larry
I guess i will have her just disconect the ribbon cable and power and reboot
a couple times , then reconect and if it don't work, try a different drive.
We live 90 miles apart.
Thanks guys.

If the CD/RW is on the primary IDE channel, try putting it on the secondary IDE channel and see if that makes a difference. If it is already on the secondary channel delete it via the device manager and reboot the computer. The secondary IDE channel will be automatically detected and reinstalled. Don't delete the primary IDE channel because your computer needs it to boot.
