Just upgraded to XP Home from ME. Trying to save docs or anything to CD is
not working. Error prompt says not authorized administator. But, when I log
on I am the admin?? Also tried safe mode under admin with same results. The
CD will play music, and software, just will not save my work...help!

You may want to go to the site of the manufacturer of
your CD writer, and seek out an possible upgrade in the
drivers for the writer or the manufacturer of the
software you utilize for CD burning for an upgrade or
patch for compatibility with XP. Generally XP contains
most hardware driver files, but upgrading from the
manufacturer when available is wise. Lastly, you may also
possibly need a firmware upgrade for the burner.

Another trick would be to uninstall the software for
burning and then reinstall providing you have the disk.

Last idea, get new burning software as some older
software may no longer be compatible with XP, especially
when upgrading from ME.

Best o' luck

Were you ever able to write to a CD using this drive? In other words, could
this be a reader drive only?

First right click your CD Writer drive icon and select Properties. Is there
a Recording Tab? If there is and you use third party CD Writing software
like Nero or Roxio ensure the box that enables recording on this device is
unchecked. If you have no third party CD Writing software and plan to use
XP's software then ensure the box is checked. You might also wish to look at
the Microsoft Knowledgebase Articles here
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q316529 and here

If you did an 'over the top upgrade' of XP to Me and didn't first uninstall
your CD Writing software application you could be in for a bit of a ride. CD
Writing software doesn't survive the upgrade well. Try reinstalling the
software and see if that helps.

It sounds as though you are trying to write to the CDRW drive directly
from the applicatin "Save" type dialog box. If so, I have a rude
shock for you - you can't do that, at least not with the native XP
writing tools.

To treat the CDR(W) like a big giant floppy drive, you have to install
a third party application that allows packet-writing. Companies like
Roxio and Ahead Nero package these abilities into their CD mastering
products.

Personally, I'd say you are better off NOT being able to do this.
Packet-writing is fine and works great, until it doesn't. It will
fail when you must have it to access that one file on the CDR(W) that
you don't have anywhere else in the world.

Boy are you behind the times. As lossless and the alike technology has
cured this problem for years now.

Cheers!
