cd writer not recognised

A friend of mine has a Philips 1610a cd writer that he has been using for a
year with no problems. Last week windows decided that there was no cd
writer installed. Has anyone got any suggestions why it has suddenly
stopped working.
Win xp pro, Easy cd creator platinum, clone cd

link to a patch that often resolves this problem

Also, he might check to see if the internal cabling came loose.
