CD-RW

HI.
New to cd-rw.
When dragging and dropping to a cd-rw, see if I'm missing something'
xp tells me the cd doesn't have enough disk space since I backed=-up to
it with 500-600mb data. So, cd-rw's data don't get over-written??
I must delete the contents of the cd and then burn and everything seems
ok.
One more question: Can there be any data degradation when one deletes and
burns
data onto a cd once or twice a week??

Thanks,
James

You are using XP CD Burner. XP CD Burner closes/finalizes the disk. That means
even if you write 1 mb data, you cant write more until you format it.
Solution : Use a 3rd party program to write CD's and choose the option to not
close/finalize the disk so you can continue writing until the disk is full. I
will recommend Nero* or Roxio Easy CD Creator*.

* Nero : http://www.nero.com/nero7/ena/Products.html
* Easy CD Creater: <www.roxio.com/enu/products/creator/suite/overview.html>

To drag and drop to optical media you'll need to install packet writing
software. You'll find it included with many burning suites (Roxio, Nero,
etc.)

About your second question: 'Can' there be data degradation? Yes. 'Will'
there be data degradation? No way to predict in advance.

Capacity of crdw formatted for packet recording (aka "drag and drop")
usually is well under 600 MB, so what you see is normal.
If your recording software allows "disk at once" format, the
capacity can be closer to 700 mb.

Yes. From time to time, do complete erase of the cdrw, and always do
read-back validation after backup of important data.
