CD burner problems

I have an internal cd\dvd burner that has suddenly developed an odd problem.
When I try to burn anything onto a dvd\r or dvd\rw disk everything is fine
but when I try to do the same thing with a cd\r or cd\rw nothing ever gets
recorded. I would appreciate any help in resolving this issue.

Likely the laser used to burn CDs has failed, you may need a
new drive.

Is there anyway I can confirm this for definite before I get a new drive.

You don't mention the burning software used, make sure you have selected CD
for the new compilation if there is a choice when using both media types..
You might also use a cleaning disk, the optical lens may just be dirty
too..?

I am using the Nero burning software that came with my pc. I have made sure
that all the correct options are selected regarding media type. I will
purchase a cleaning kit and try cleaning as you suggest.
