Make sure you log on to your computer with "Administrator" privileges. For XP check this with Control Panel / User Accounts. Some (most) games write to the machine registry when started or as part of an "install" / "play from CD" process.
This may be happening in your case? By running as an administrative account you can be sure these data 'writes' (to an area called HKLM) actually succeed and the game should work as expected.

Try a cleaning CD/DVD. They're cheap ($6-$7) and work in DVD players
too.
