CD Rom Question

Cliff

I have Windows XP with a DVD Drive as my "D" drive and a
IOMEGA CD/RW as my "E". For some reason, when I put any
kind of CD into the "D" drive, it doesn't want to
autoplay or even recognize the drive. I go to ADMIN
TOOLS and under DISK MANAGEMENT I notice that the "D"
drive always seems to have autoplay set with a default
of "music files". For some reason I can no longer but a
simple game CD into the DVD ROM drive and install the
program. Keeps saying "D DRIVE INACCESSIBLE". Any
thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Losing the cd drive is "normal" behaviour on Dell systems. Dell will be
happy to tell you this for a price and/or will promptly give you directions
that will require that you disassemble the system and end up having to
reformat the system only to have the same problem show up again, provided
that nothing else was damaged beyond repair in the process. Is should be
noted that Dell and Windows XP do not mix well and sp1a will make the
problems worse.

If your system is not a Dell, you might simply try removing the CD's IDE
cable from the system, booting the system and then after successfully
shutting the system down, reattach the CD's IDE cable and then reboot.
Things should reinitialize again. You also may wish to go to the CD drive's
manufacturer's website and look for any bios/driver changes suggested for
the drive in question.

I am assuming that tinkering with hardware, flashing a CD drive or reading
manufacturer's instructons are not considered unusual for the end user to
do. Of course, there is always Dell customer support if you are into
self-flagellation and self-mutilation as well as enjoy speaking with convict
labor in China, since their salaries (and maximum educational requirements)
are comparable to people unable to be employed by the WalMart preteen sweat
shop labor force in El Salvador.

Nothing against El Salvadorians, they are good people.
