CD - ROM problem

Hello
I just got xp installed on this computer not very long ago... my cd-rom was installed its lights are on on the tower, they open and close... but it is not visible on my computer, as at BIOS setup it shows there is a CD ROM, on other hand at device manager there is no such devise is available after scanning for new harwadre it does's not detect this device is there any problem with the device or O
