CD ROM Problem

I have an unusual problem with my CD Rewritable drive. A couple of days ago,
my windows system 'detected some new hardware' and proceeded to install it.
Since then my CD drive hasn't worked. It caused windows media player to crash
a couple of times, now it doesn't detect when a disc is placed in the drive.
When i look at the drive properties, its name shows up as HL-DT-ST
CD-VW$GGE-8724B$ - which i'm sure i recognise as being part of the name of
the 'new' hardware that my computer detected.
The drive still appears on 'My computer', and the device manager says it is
working properly. Nothing in the troubleshooting guide can help.
Does the string of letters and characters above sound like the actual name
of my CD Drive? Or has something else been installed in its place?

Thanks in advance for any help anybody can offer.
