I was making a backup CD from my "D" drive reader to
my "E" drive burner today when the computer stopped half
way through the operation. Now the "D" drive does not show
up on My Computer. However, the "D" drive will play a CD.

I've talked with both Dell and the local computer shop and
reinstalled the drivers on both drives. They both suggest
that I may need to reinstall Windows 2000 to correct the
problem. I did this about 3 weeks ago for another problem
and it caused major headaches. Any other suggestions?

A short dirty little fix would be to find out the name of
your drive controller type and reinstall the hard drive
controller drivers. I have ALI ata100. If I want to use
the super fast functions I install the newer drivers for
IDE. It detects the drives with out messing up the curent
install of windows. Ask dell for your chipset id.
