cd rom not found by windows 98

I just installed a new HD and win 98.
When I first installed it everything went ok My cd rom was listed under my
computer and i could access it.
On turning the system off and firing it up the next morning there was no cd rom
icon in my computer.
I tried detecting new hardware in control panel but it was not found.
There is no cd rom Icon in device manager.
When I boot up using the windows startup disk with cd rom support, I can
access it ok from dos.

Does anyone know why windows is not finding it?

OK,

Is the CD-ROM on the same cable as the hard drive? If so is it jumpered
as a slave and the hard drive as master?

Try installing the drive on its own cable to the IDE2 channel as a master.

Make sure all cables are snug. Even if they are simply pull them off and
reattach. Sometimes one pin is not connecting well causing a short to net
send the electrical message needed.

This may sound crazy, but try it. As your computer is starting hit "del"
(or whatever) to enter the bios setup screens. Where the CD-Rom drive
should be, set it to "NONE". Save and exit. I don't know why, but windows
sometimes works better with optical drives if the motherboard BIOS is set to
none. If that doesn't help, you can always go back into BIOS to reprogram
it to what it's set at now. -Dave

the gnome

Have you installed Adaptec burning software and then Nero, cos that can
cause CDs to disappear.

Echoing everything others Dave and Jan said, if you happen to have on
hand another (known-to-be-working) cdrom drive, you may want to
install it in an effort to conform that the problem is not your
presently installed cdrom drive.

Is there power to the cdrom? LED lights, drive drawer opens and
closes?

You could try booting with a Win98 start-up diskette, enable cdrom
support, and see if the drive functions within that limited DOS
environment.

These problems can be a real headache. I've seen drives function
perfectly and not show up anywhere.

He already said it does work off a boot disk, which makes me think it might
be a CD burning software issue? If it works in dos, it's probably not a bad
drive but then again anything is possible!
