cd rom non existent

i was recently defragmenting my drive and somewhere along
the line something went wrong, so i restarted my computer
and my hardware drivers for cd/dvd rom and monitor were
gone. i tried using the repair function on the xp disk,
that did nothing. i then tried using my old 98 startup
disk cause i knew that it had drivers on it. that worked
by installing the drivers trhough dos in starup, but when
i reset it will not recognise them. i'm really getting
frustrated cause when the computer starts up i can see
the computer sauing that they are there but i can't use
it when i'm in windows

Boot into safe mode, open device manager, remove all instances of the
offending devices, reboot, and Windows should redetect the hardware.
