CD-ROM Keeps Disappearing From Device Manager

I have Windows XP Professional installed with SP1. I have an LG 52x CD-ROM.
Everytime I try to use the CD-ROM to install something, the installation
will start but then it will come to halt and prompt me for the drive that
contains the next installation file. When I go to browse, the CD-ROM drive
is gone and when I check Device Manager, it's not listed there either. If I
restart the computer, the CD-ROM appears again in Device Manager and when I
open My Computer but if I try to install something from the CD-ROM again,
the problem re-occurs. I tried going to LG's web site to get a driver for
the CD-ROM for Windows XP, but no driver is available. Any ideas what the
problem might be?

Actually, the only thing I've tried to install so far is Microsoft Office
with the CD-ROM and I couldn't complete the
install. I just re-formatted the computer.
