CD rom cannot be seen by system

One day when my laptop started,Toshiba Satellite Pro 4600
running WIN2K, a message popped upo saying there was no CD
ROM attached. This came out of the blue and the CD ROM
drive has not been accessible since. There is no
mechanicle explanation.

Have you tried to unplug your CD-Drive, restart the Computer, plug in the
CD-Drive and then once again restarting your computer if this solves your
problem?
