CD rom and DVD problem

Hi Guys,

Getting a bit desperate....

Format HD, install windows XP pro SP2, updated everything working fine.
no problem at all till 5 days later...

Today I switch on my computer and no DVD or CDROM drives appear in
windows. I go to control panel / system /hardware and they are there
with a yellow exclamation. I tried to unistall and check for hardware
changes and they appear again with yellow exclamation, tried to update
drivers (using windows) and problem is still there.

CDROM and DVD have power and system is recognising them (if i put
windows cd it boots from the CD) so it is clearly a windows problem,
just do not know what to do...

Thanks

Reinstall the IDE drivers for the mainboard. Also, check the master/slave
jumpers on the drives. -DAve

Hi Mike, thanks for the tip, but ...

I also just noticed that the yellow exclamation mark comes with the
error:
"Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but
cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)"
But as I said: 1) the driver has power and 2) I can boot with windows
XP, so board recognises it.

I tried also to uninstall ide devices from control panel/system and
also to update this drivers from the control panel. Windows tells me
that cannot find a newer version. Jumpers are fine (i think) DVD is as
master and CD as slave. I have disconected the cd to see if anything
changed but to no success...

Getting very annoyed!

Everything you've posted is pointing most directly at a resource conflict
with one of your IDE controllers and something else. (could be many things)
Easiest thing to try at this point would be to clear CMOS settings and load
default (not optimized default) settings. If that doesn't work, you are
going to have to view hardware devices by "resources by connection" in
device manager to see what is on the same IRQ as your mainboard IDE
controllers, and try disabling that or assigning a different IRQ to that (if
possible) in the BIOS. -Dave
