CD Rom and CD Writer is not recognized

I have been told that I have to backup myfiles and reinstall and format my harddrive with my recovery disk by compaq because system restore points have been wiped by a recent windows update. Very similar situation to yours
 
Please give us more detail. What exactly is your problem? Are your drives
not being seen in My Computer? Are they not accessible from the Backup
Program?
