I have a horrible scratch on my XP Pro cd. And when I try
to load windows it cant read driver.cab. Is there anyway
to get a new cd without paying alot of money?

Greetings,

Try contacting Microsoft by phone. They might be able to replace your CD if
you send them the CD. You'll need to have a lot proof that you have an
original copy of Windows XP.

Thanks and best of luck!

This may sound really stupid. But it works for me when I have a cd that has
scratches on it. Try washing it down with Windex Glass Cleaner. Why it
works, I have no clue, but it has only failed me once. It's like the store
I work at, if we can't get a credit card to run through the machine because
of an invalid magnetic error, we swipe it with a plastic bag over the card
and it works. One of the mysteries in life.

If yours was a retail version, see
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;[ln];326246.

But if it was an OEM version, Microsoft won't support it and
you're probably out of luck. However it doesn't hurt to try
asking the OEM you bought it from if they can replace it.

Cant hurt eh? I always thought it was interesting that the data on your
cd is just under the label, ie on top of the cd. The scratches on the
bottom I imagine just bend the light so it cant be read correctly. Oddly
my son carries around his cd collection like a stack of baseball cards,
shuffles them around, never, ever uses a case, puts them in his backpack
all loose, and hardly ever has a problem using them.
