cd-r problem

I am unable to write to a cd-r more than once using XP writing software.
It will accept a file on a brand new disc, but if I try to add to it later i
get the error
"windows not not support this cd-r format. Please try another disc"
Any Ideas what is causing this?

What CD-R burning program? Microsoft Windows does not provide
a CD-R burning program. If the program finalizes the CD-R disc,
then it has been permanently closed; no further sessions can be
written to the disc. CD-R burning programs that closes a session
but not finalize the disc are able to write additional sessions.
