CD/DVD ROM AND CD BURNER

Both were working fine on 10/22/03. Computer did
automatic windows update during the night. Drives are no
longer recognized as of 10-23. Its actually renamed the
CD ROM. I also keep getting a popup that says Autoplay
(it has a little flashlight searching for it). I really
need the burner back up and running.... what to do???

???Did the "lot" of Microsoft updates received/installed during that night
include 1 related to an upgrade of the XP built-in CD Burning software???

That one upgrade which seems (!) not reversible caused "Nero-Burning Rom" ,
the standard (v. 6.009) CD/DVD "creator" over here to become simply NOT
accessAble
at all.

Both the CD/DVD burner and the standard CD/DVD reader were wiped-out from
the list of drives in Nero.

Not exactly your problem but seems somewhat related.

Only the option to "copy" the files as "*.ng"s (not sure anymore if the "ng"
extension is correct) on a (unwanted)newly created image drive (prior to the
final burn) was available and the new "official" burning software became the
Microsoft's one.

I do not know if the resulting copies of the DVDs would have been valid
ones. I stopped the processes right there.

Tried to find "reverse" on the update and couldn't.

Uninstalled then reinstalled all of Nero and still the built in app would
act the same way.

Out of frustration I wiped out the WHOLE (drastic but effective) XP setup.

Nero is THE burning software I insist on using for all of my burns.

Now : a brand spanking new XP setup with all of the security patches
reinstalled as I very CAREFULLY manually selected the various other updates
and this after I read and reread all of the (p!ss-p**r) Ms descriptions.
?Could they not make "plain" english translations?

Not to say your solution will turn out to be so involved but I just can't
stand the system not responding or not being set-up exactly the way I want
it to be.

Quite ready to "RLOL" if the solution was a 10 minutes "fix"!
