CD/DVD HELP

I don't understand the difference between the many discs.
I have a Sony desktop with cd-rw and a new Sony laptop with dvd+rw and I
have a Kodak easy share dx6490 camera. My question is there a disc that I can
use to take pictures off my desktop {i use this for downloading my pictures
from my camera] and be able to show them on my laptop and a dvd player
connected to our tv.
I would like to be able to make dvd's to send to my grandchildren but I made
one with a cd-r and it will play on both sony computers but will not play on
the dvd players. Also my laptop will not put back-up data on a cd-r. This is
why I am confused as to what disc to buy.
Please help.

I will give it a try. A real pain with all these formats.
With a CD-RW drive: use CD-R or CD-RW discs. Better using CD-R discs for use
with a DVD player. Yes you can copy photos to a CD-R disc and use this disc
in a DVD player to display your photo files on your TV. However, the DVD
player should be a recent one, about within the last two years.
With a DVD+RW drive, you can use a DC+R disc or a DVD+R disc. But again the
DVD player must be able to read a +R disk. Most recent DVD player (less than
one year) will read a +R disc, while older one will read only -R discs.
I know it is confusing, but check your DVD manual to see what kind of disc
it can read.
The latest DVD players will read everything, -R, -RW and +R and +RW CDs as
well as -R, -RW and +R and +RW DVD discs, the most "universal" reader is -R
CD when using a DVD player.

Thank you I will have to digest this. I am sure I will be asking more.
