Vista no longer recognizes CD/DVD RW drive; is listed in Hardware and in
BIOS but driver corrupt or missing. Have run Repair on Vista, Sys Restore,
retried driver installation, removed recent software... still get error Code
39. Microsoft has no solution, by default error reporting and search for
solution.

There might be more persons knowledgeable about Windows Vista in one of
the Vista discussion groups. Try scrolling down the list in the left
pane of the web interface and clicking the plus sign to expand
microsoft.public.windows as necessary to select one of the Vista groups
(OP appears to be using the web interface).

In Windows XP and some other versions of Windows derived from Windows NT
this issue was sometimes resolved with the procedures described in

Microsoft Knowledgebase Article ID: 314060

'You can no longer access the CD drive or the DVD drive, or you receive
an error message after you remove a CD recording program or a DVD
recording program in Windows XP: "error code 31"'

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060

But obtain some feedback in the Vista groups to see if this issue
persists in that version before attempting those procedures.
