cd/dvd drive

My cd/dvd drive does not recognize (or read) what I put in. I ended up
buying 34 different software to help fix this problem.....to no avail.

I have an HP Pavilion 6500-I wanted to put it in to safe mode, but don't
know how to do that on this notebook (compared to dell, I do and fixed some
problems that way)........of course there are any books to follow either, How
does one address problems like this.
