CD/DVD Drive does not read disks

My CD/DVD Multiburner drive (IBM Multiburner Plus?) will no longer recognize
any type of disk I put in. I had a DVD in the drive for a few days and when
I went to start it again today- it worked for a few seconds then froze up.
After I restarted my computer it would not read the DVD or any other CDs or
CDROMs. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling my drive. The Device Manager
says the drive is working properly. When you go to My Computer or Windows
Explorer it looks as if there is nothing in the drive. This happened once
before and after changing disks a few times it finally kicked in and started
working again. This time no luck. Help!

Swap the drive out for a known-working one. You can also put the suspect
drive in another machine to test it, but I expect it has just died and will
need to be replaced.

See if you can still burn one. If so, the reading optical lens is dead
(there are separate ones for reading and writing).
