Cd/DVD combo wont't start UNLESS !

The problem is this .

My combo DVD/CD drive will not start after
a shutdown .

I can get it to start by running "sfc /scannow".

After "sfc" the unit will read DVD's, CD's and burn .

I have done everything I can think of to repair the
problem ... except a clean install of XP . Which
I'm trying to avoid like the plague .

Deleted drivers ... both in storage as well as USB
and several other distantly related things . Deleted
most drivers

I have used a different drive and it displays much the
same response .

No error messages.

Running the Quick(?) install disks
finds the unit every time when the machine
boots.

Any new suggestions would be appreciated .

Do NOT be afraid of the registry hack here.
It is SAFE and has helped MANY people.
Respect the registry, don't fear it.

1) Log on with Administrative Privileges

2) Open the Registry Editor:
a) Go to Start then select Run.
b) Type regedit and click OK.

3) Backup you registry by:
a) Highlight My Computer by clicking on it once.
b) Click File (Windows XP) or Registry (Windows 2000), then Export
Registry File.
c) Select export range All; to ensure your entire registry is backed up
completely.
d) Select where you would like to save this backup, name the File, and
Click on the SAVE button.

4) Remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values:
a) Go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\
{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
b) Highlight this key by left clicking on it once.
c) On the right hand side delete the values Upperfilters and Lowerfilters.

5) Restart your computer.

Or try this:

Select 'Windows Utilities' and scroll down to 'Restore CD/DVD drives to
Windows Explorer.'
Perhaps his utility will do the trick. =)

Beyond that - a repair install might work/fix it...

Did the DL from "http://www.dougknox.com/"
and it worked until I loaded a VGA Web Cam (USB) .

So I want to try the regedit but the key you name
has no "upper" .. "lower" fillters listed .
Should have said ... running XP Home .

Any more help would be welcome

I do not understand why loading a webcam would have any effect on the
devices. Sounds like you have more serious troubles and should consider
backing up everything important to you (emails, contacts, favorites,
documents, pictures, product keys, product installation files, etc..) and
performa the repair install to make sure you don;t have any corruption
what-so-ever in the files.

Also - before doing that - when was the last time you scanned for
adware/spyware and did a CHKDSK and DEFRAG?

Sounds like I'm for it !

Did a full scan(chk disk) and defrag about two day before the problem .

Have done both since the problem .

Ran Spybot, Ad Aware sevreal times in the last few days .
Both are up to date as well as a virus check .

Have done a copy of my dbx files bun now see there is a way to export them to
a folder .

Will they import as easily ? Know I always have problems with address books !
