You are right, that would get me closer to solution. I do that if Bobs
suggestion doesn't work.
It's not my computer so I dont have access too it now. But I will get it
back soon.
I list all your good suggestions in order, and try it later. : )

Now that I told computer owner that it works with disc inserted at boot.
They are not in a hurry to get it fixed... And they need the computer.
But I hope I get it back nxt week. I really want too know how this can be.

As I wrote to Bob, I have allredy checked if any filters was the problem. I
found a tool to scan for filters and remove them.

I wrote:
"I checked computer. No burning software. I also scanned for upper or lower
filters, if some old installation of burning software had left some. But
filter scanner didn´t find any."

You are right, I will contact Microsoft but first I´m gonna try the
suggestion from Ian D. It would tell if problem its related to hardware or XP.

Ian Wrote:
"Here's a test to eliminate XP as a possibility. If you can get a Win98
boot floppy, boot with that, and from the menu select CD support.
As DOS is loading, note the letter assigned to the DVD drive.
Then, after DOS finishes loading, put in a CD and see if you can
read it. If you can't, it's definitely a hardware problem. If you can
read the disk, XP is somehow involved."

I can't do anything today more than list your good suggestions on order. The
computer isn't mine. They needed it and was happy to knew they can get player
to work by simply left a disc in player at boot...

But I really wan't to know how this can be!! I hope I get it back nxt week.
Pls if you have more ideas pls tell. I have made a list of all good
suggestions and gonna try them in order.

Thx for helping me out :)

Try also, after boot, to see System Log of Event Viewer
that could show you problems with some hardware problem

hope this helps, Carlos.
