CD Drive Retrieval

Hi,

I have encountered a problem with my cd drive. When I go to my
computer there is no longer a D: drive. When I put a cd in the computer, the
drive runs but doesn't read: the same goes for dvd's, software, and when I
try to burn a cd it says "cd burner software not found." I may have
accidentally erased the software or something. I would appreciate advice on
how to retrieve my D: drive, and if that is not the problem any suggestions
are great!

Thanks,

The drive should be recognised as present and work without any extra drivers
or software; XP supports CD drives. The drive may have failed, unless
you've installed something like another disk and gotten the jumpers wrong.
Is the drive present in Device Manager? If not, shut down, open the case
and verify that the cabling is solidly in place. If the data cable is
disodged but the power cable is attached, the drive will spin when you
insert a disk, but nothing will run. If reseating the cables doesn't work,
consider drive failure.

I buy new CD-DVD rewritable drives for about CDN$40 now, and installation is
trivial; one jumper, two cables, four screws. You don't need to buy any
amount of packaging or install kits, just the bare drive, perhaps with the
application CD (here this usually means DVD producer and Nero).
