Hi, anyone able to offer any advice on why my cd drive on a laptop is not
recognised - when i go to 'my computer', there is no H: drive, therefore, am
unable to install software i was trying to install. The drive opens and
closes and also makes a humming noise. Any ideas please?

Go to Start > Run and type in: devmgmt.msc
and press the Enter key. After the Device Manager
window opens, scroll down to your CD-ROM
drive, click the "+" to expand, then right-click on
your CD Drive and select Uninstall. You will
be prompted to reboot your computer, so reboot
and Windows XP will reinstall the CD Drive.

I recently worked on a laptop that acted the same way. The final
solution was to go to the manufacturer's support page, download and save
to floppy a file to flash the bios.

On a temporary basis, I was able to get the device to appear by going to
Device Manager, and change its driver. I actually used the same driver,
but this brought it up and made it usable for awhile.
